An opponent that brings good memories to a Brazil with a renewed spirit after the victory at Wembley.

This Tuesday’s rival at the Santiago Bernabéu, Spain lost to the Seleção two finals the last times the countries met. The Confederations Cup title in 2013 and Olympic gold in Tokyo-2020 serve as inspiration for a Brazil that seeks to rediscover its path to titles under the command of Dorival Jr.

Throughout history, there have been nine matches between Brazilians and Spaniards for main teams, with five wins for Brazil, two draws and two for Spain. The 2-1 two years ago in Japan with the Under-23 team makes the statistics even more favorable to the green and yellow team.

Brazil x Spain main teams

  • 9 games
  • 5 Brazil’s victories
  • two draws
  • two Spain’s victories
  • 14 Brazil goals
  • 8 Spain goals

The confrontation also has curious facts such as five clashes in world Cups. Brazil and Spain measured forces in 1934, 1950, 1962, 1978 and 1986with new superiority in favor of the Brazilians: three wins, one draw and one defeat.

This Tuesday’s match will be the first at the Santiago Bernabéu, but, on the other hand, two of those meetings were at Maracanã. The last of them was emblematic and caused an explosion of optimism in the stadium in the 3-0 victory in the Confederations Cup final. Fred, twice, and Neymar scored the goals.

World Cup clashes

  • 1934 – Spain 3 x 1 Brazil, in Italy
  • 1950 – Brazil 6 x 1 Spain, in Brazil
  • 1962 – Brazil 2 to 1 Spain, in Chile
  • 1978 – Brazil 0 x 0 Spain, in Argentina
  • 1986 – Brazil 1 x 0 Spain, in Mexico

It was the last meeting of the main teams, but the final at the Tokyo Games was also historic. Brazil and Spain faced each other at Yokohama Stadium, winning the gold medal, and Malcom scored the decisive goal to make it 2-1 in extra time. Matheus Cunha had opened the scoring for the Seleção, while Oyarzabal equalized.

Bruno Guimarães, Douglas Luiz and Richarlison were in the Olympic final and are among those called up for this match. On the Spanish side, the main figure is coach Luis de la Fuente, promoted to the main team after the Qatar Cup.

– The Spanish team is young and, like the Brazilian team, deserves respect for what it has been performing over the last few months – said Dorival Júnior about the match.

Tuesday’s game will be the third on Spanish territory. In 1990, Spain scored 3-0 in Brazil after the World Cup in Italy in a match played in Gijón. In 1999, there was a goalless draw in Vigo.
