Shochikubai Shirakabegura Mio Premium Rose sparkling sake has been recalled following reported health concerns associated with its color (Takara Shuzo)

About 100 thousand bottles of sparkling sake are withdrawals from store shelves in Japan due to a risk of kidney damage linked to the drink’s attractive pink color.

A Takara Shuzo Co. announced the recall of approximately 18 thousand 750ml and 78 thousand 300ml bottles of Mio Premium Rose on March 23.

The attractive pink color of sparkling sake comes from a malt grain, the benikoji, that was collected by its manufacturer, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co.one day earlier.

Although no health problems has been reported with Mio Premium Rose since it was released in January, Takara Shuzo is pulling the sake from shelves at the request of the pharmaceutical company.

Kobayashi Pharmaceutical recalled 300 thousand units of 5 products containing benikoji, including the Benikoji Coleste Help supplement, following reports of health problems.

According to the company, 26 people were hospitalized for kidney problems after consuming the product containing benikoji.

Eighty percent of the benikoji produced was sold to around 50 trading companies, food manufacturers and other businesses.
