Motion to claim approved unanimously. Repeated need to implement a bypass route
The Palmela City Council demands that Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) urgently rehabilitate the National Road (EN) 379, between S. Gonçalo and Volta da Pedra. And at the same time, it reiterates the need to implement a variant of that route by 2030. The demands are expressed in a motion approved, unanimously, by the municipal executive at the decentralized meeting on the 20th.
The municipality wants to see the EN 379 quickly repaved and properly signposted (horizontally and vertically), as this is a “structuring road on the Setúbal peninsula”, and “today serves thousands of people who live and work in the region”.
“The strong tourist attractiveness of the Arrábida territory represents increased pressure on this road, along with the traffic of heavy vehicles, which travel to the Autoeuropa Industrial Park and the expanding logistics and business hub of Vila Amélia”, explains the municipality in document. “The strategic centrality of the region and the intense use of the EN 379 have not been taken into account by successive governments, which have allowed this route to reach a regrettable state, with very damaged and irregular road surfaces, poor horizontal and vertical signage and badly treated shoulders. outside urban perimeters, which puts passers-by and the population at risk”, he reinforces.
The city council recalls that last year, after several steps with the guardianship, it was informed of “IP’s intention to carry out a rehabilitation intervention between 2024 and 2025”, however, it emphasizes, “the formalization” of this commitment is urgent.
“As this intervention cannot be postponed, we cannot lose sight of the demand, which has been around for around three decades, for a variant road to decongest traffic, increase the population’s quality of life, with environmental and safety gains in the heart of these locations, and improve access to areas of economic activities”, maintains the municipality, which decided to inform various entities of the motion, such as the President of the Republic, president of the Assembly of the Republic, prime minister, parliamentary groups, representative bodies of local authorities and parishes, in addition to the own IP.
