The mother and stepfather of a 4-year-old child, who died from abuse in Florianópolis in 2015, were arrested in Capão da Canoa (RS) on Wednesday (27). They had been on the run since June 2023, when they were sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The man had a fake driver’s license when he was arrested. Civil Police t-shirts and a court officer’s card were also found with the couple.
The investigation found that the pair had been living in tourist cities and beaches in the south for about a year “living a comfortable life”.
According to the Civil Police, the child died due to “Shaken Baby Syndrome”. This is characterized by sudden movements of the child’s body, including intense shaking of the head, when the child is grabbed by the extremities or shoulders.
As indicated by the medical report, moving the child’s head can result in the rupture of cerebral vessels, leading to the formation of hematomas and hemorrhages.
The couple claimed that the child had fallen and hit his head while he was with them at a shopping mall. At the time, she showed no signs of being unwell, so she was taken to the hospital the next day, where she was pronounced dead.
The two were convicted of crime of ill-treatment, which resulted in the death of the woman’s son. The arrest orders were issued after the final judgment of the conviction, issued by the 1st Criminal Court of Florianópolis, after the return of the records from the higher courts.
