One of the most innovative science fiction trilogies is in the Max catalogue. The best time to watch it again, as there are rumors of another sequel.

Now you have the option: either take the blue pill and your life continues as before, or take the red pill and watch the revolutionary Matrix trilogy. The timing couldn’t be better, as recently Warner Bros. announced another sequel to the science fiction saga: Matrix 5. It remains to be seen how this will work after the deconstruction of the Matrix: Resurrections franchise and without the pioneering Wachowski sisters.

What is the story of The Matrix?

At the beginning of the first film, hacker Thomas Anderson, known as Neo (Keanu Reeves), wonders what the mysterious Matrix is about. Rumors about the concept are circulating online, but no one really seems to know what it is. When he is contacted at a nightclub by undercover Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), who brings him closer to answers to her questions, he suddenly finds himself the target of Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) and his colleagues.

However, the Matrix’s henchmen are unable to prevent the meeting between Neo and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). The leader of Trinity’s mysterious group firmly believes he has found the sought-after and prophesied Chosen One… and presents Neo with a choice that will change her reality forever.

What follows is hard-hitting sci-fi action, for which a completely new special effects technique had to be invented. This effect bullet time It has been copied and parodied so many times over the years that we haven’t finished counting the examples.

Cyberpunk saga with a rainbow of interpretations

The Matrix films were heavily inspired by Japanese anime, such as Ghost in the Shell or Akira, and have been interpreted from various angles over the years. In addition to the existentialist questions about reality and consciousness, and the obvious religious parallels, filmmaker Lilly Wachowski confirmed another level of interpretation years later.

This relates very personally to her and her sister Lana, as both Wachowskis are trans and were not out at the time of The Matrix’s production. Three years ago, in a Netflix video titled Behind the StreamsLilly explained:

“I’m excited that people are talking about The Matrix as films with trans narratives and I love how much these films mean to trans people […] because when we talk about transformation, especially in the world of science fiction, it’s about imagination, world-building and the idea that the seemingly impossible becomes possible. Maybe that’s why the film touches them. I’m glad that was the original intention. But the corporate world wasn’t ready for that yet.”

Where can you watch the Matrix movies?

Matrix, Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions are available in the Max catalog. The film Matrix Resurrections, which takes place 20 years after the events of Matrix Revolutions, can be seen on both Max and Prime Video.
