Prime Minister-designate, Lus Montenegro, today presents the composition of his minority Government to the President of the Republic, before taking office next Tuesday at the Ajuda National Palace.
This calendar was announced by the president of the PSD himself, after the hearing with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in which he was nominated as prime minister, following the early legislative elections of March 10th that gave victory to the Democratic Alliance (PSD, CDS-PP coalition). and PPM).
At that time, Lus Montenegro said he expected to form a Government based on the majority “constituted by the deputies of the PSD and CDS-PP”, since he did not have the support of an absolute majority in parliament.
Montenegro and the ministers of the XXIV Constitutional Government take office on Tuesday and the Secretaries of State two days later.
On Wednesday, the outgoing Prime Minister, Antnio Costa, after a mandate of around eight years, received Lus Montenegro at the official residence of So Bento, a kind of testimonial in the leadership of the executive.
The day before, the PSD and the Liberal Initiative informed that they will not move forward “at this time towards the celebration of broad understandings”, including those regarding the formation of the new Government.
After the inauguration next week, the next step will be the presentation of the Government’s program.
According to the Constitution, this document with the guidelines for governance for the next four years is submitted for consideration by the Assembly of the Republic within a maximum period of ten days after its appointment, which should happen in the first 12 days of April.
The Constitution also determines that a Government only enters into full functions after its program has been assessed by parliament, if it is not rejected.
