School director resigns after insults on social media.

The director of the Maurice Ravel high school in Paris, France, resigned from his position after being the target of death threats on social media for asking three students not to wear the Islamic headscarf while at school, according to the French law that prohibits the use of religious symbols in public spaces.

It all happened at the end of February and the request was not well accepted by one of the students, who refused to remove the scarf. The young woman filed a complaint against the teacher, alleging that she was mistreated and that she suffered “a severe blow to the arm”, a complaint that was, however, dismissed.

French politicians have already expressed support for the director. The Prime Minister and former Minister of Education, Gabriel Attal, received the teacher in his office, and announced that the State “will file a complaint for slanderous accusation” against the student who unfairly accused the director of aggression after refusing to withdraw the veil.In 2004, the French Parliament banned the use of the Islamic veil in schools to guarantee the neutrality and secularity of state institutions, and last year extended the ban to the ‘abaya’, a long robe worn by Muslim women. However, a 26-year-old man was arrested for being allegedly responsible for the threats against the director and is expected to be tried in April.
