Mato Grosso do Sul authorities determined that the anaconda known as “Ana Júlia” died of natural causes. The animal was found dead floating in the Formoso River, in Bonito (MS), a city that is about 260 kilometers from the state capital, on Sunday, the 24th. The almost seven meter long snake is the same one that went viral when swimming alongside from a Dutch biologist on social media.

On social media, photographer Cristian Dimitrius, who had been following Ana Júlia for ten years, claimed that the anaconda had been shot dead, a fact that was denied by the authorities.

According to Emerson Lopes dos Reis, director of the Criminalistics Institute of the Scientific Police of Mato Grosso do Sul, the authorities were called on the afternoon of March 25th to the anaconda’s death. “We immediately called our center specializing in environmental expertise and sent a veterinary medical expert to examine the animal’s corpse,” said the authority.
According to the director, no holes or projectiles were identified in the anaconda’s body. Part of the snake’s corpse was sent to Campo Grande due to its advanced state of decomposition.
In the state capital, X-ray examinations were carried out and found no injuries to the skull and head. “The animal was not killed violently”, declared Emerson Lopes dos Reis.
