MEven though ‘The Three-Body Problem’ may not be the success Netflix expected, the truth is that the series has been one of the most praised by viewers in the first few days it became available.

Without a confirmed second season yet, this adaptation of author Cixin Liu’s work has also caused people to talk about the dramatic behind-the-scenes events reported by The New York Times.

It all starts in 2014 with a 39-year-old Chinese billionaire, named Lin Qi, who – through his video game company Yoozoo – decided to acquire the rights to the work ‘The Three-Body Problem’ and recruit Netflix and those responsible for ‘The Game of Thrones’, David Benioff and DB Weiss, to produce the adaptation.

However, Lin Qi did not stay alive long enough to attend the premiere of ‘The Three-Body Problem’ as he died in December 2020 – reportedly a victim of poisoning by the executive who was initially in charge of Yoozoo’s film division. Xu Yao, the person responsible for the crime, planned the murder shortly after being demoted from his position, allegedly for poor performance.

Dissatisfied with the decision, Xu Yao decided to start planning his revenge, building a laboratory on the outskirts of Shanghai where he began testing different types of poisons to kill his boss – with reports claiming that the executive was a fan of ‘Breaking Bad’ . Lin Qi’s drinks were poisoned between September and December 2020, with the executive dying shortly afterwards.

Xu was recently arrested and sentenced to death in Shanghai, with the case being considered by Chinese newspapers “as bizarre as a Hollywood blockbuster”.

Neither Netflix nor Yoozoo have officially commented on the case, but in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Benioff admitted that it was a “disconcerting” situation.

“It was certainly disconcerting. When you work in this field, you expect all kinds of questions to arise. Someone poisoning the boss is not usually one of them.”said Benioff.
