Former President of the United States Donald Trump is expected to highlight the murder of a young woman from Michigan and the arrest of a suspect who had entered the country illegally from Mexico in a speech this Tuesday focused on the immigration policies of his opponent, the President Joe Biden.

The Republican candidate for the White House, who posted on his Truth Social account about the murder of 25-year-old Ruby Garcia in Grand Rapids last month, will speak in the city. Police say Garcia was shot in her car by 25-year-old Brandon Ortiz-Vite, who she was dating.

Peter Hoekstra, chairman of the Michigan Republican Party and a Trump ally, told Reuters he expects the former president to address Garcia’s murder in his speech. The Trump campaign did not respond to requests for comment.

Trump is making the immigration issue a central point of his campaign. In recent months, his rhetoric about immigrants has become increasingly dehumanizing. He has called them “worms” and “animals.”

Trump and other Republicans have cited Garcia’s killing as an example of what they say is Biden’s failure to stem the flow of illegal immigrants into the United States.

Trump accused Biden in a March speech of engaging in a “conspiracy to overthrow the United States” through lax security policies that have allowed millions of immigrants to cross the country’s border with Mexico.

Opinion polls show that voters in both parties are increasingly concerned about the steady flow of immigrants.

Biden blames Trump for encouraging Republicans not to pass legislation in Congress this year that would have strengthened security at the southern border and introduced new measures aimed at reducing illegal immigration.

The White House is also considering other measures to reduce illegal immigration next year, two officials and a third source familiar with the matter told Reuters in February.

Trump and his Republican counterparts have also cited the case of another young woman, Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student from Georgia who was allegedly murdered in February by an immigrant who was in the country illegally and who had been released on parole.

Trump frequently claims, without evidence, that immigrants have caused a rise in violent crime in American cities.
