But what was this last major earthquake to hit the country?

In September 1999, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the island. The situation generated chaos throughout Taiwan and left around 2,400 dead and more than 10,000 people injured. The number of homeless people exceeded 100 thousand. Furthermore, more than five thousand buildings were completely destroyed and had to be rebuilt from scratch.

According to news at the time, the earthquake was 145 kilometers from Taipei, the country’s capital. Tidal wave and tsunami warnings were issued, but there were none.
