If you’re a fan of war films, you’ve probably already seen this acclaimed production of the genre.
It is more than clear that Hollywood loves productions about wars, especially if they present the patriotism that defines them so much. Films like The Fate of a Nation, Last Man and American Sniper triumphed at the Oscars, but there is one that is considered the best of them all – at least in the city of stars. Its fame is even greater because it was directed by one of the eminences of the film industry: Steven Spielberg.
The mind behind films such as Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark and the blockbuster Jaws is considered a reference within the seventh art. Although there are some of his works that are more beloved than others, the filmmaker received great acclaim for making a film about the Second World War that became one of the main films of the genre: Saving Private Ryan.
Featuring performances from Tom Hanks, Matt Damon and Vin Diesel, the film was one of the strongest candidates for the 71st Academy Awards, winning ten nominations and five golden statuettes. Interestingly, the film did not win the award for Best Film, which ended up going to Shakespeare in Love.
The story tells the journey of a group of soldiers led by Captain John Miller (Hanks) to rescue the soldier James Francis Ryan (Damon). Edward Burns, Barry Pepper, Tom Sizemore and Adam Goldberg also appear in the nearly three-hour feature that was an introduction to Brothers in Arms, as well as other television series produced jointly by Spielberg and Hanks.
