NASA reported, this Tuesday (2), that it is analyzing an object that fell from the sky and hit a man’s home in the American state of Florida, which may have come from the International Space Station (ISS).

Alejandro Otero, from Naples, published in X that the object “crossed the roof and two floors” of his house, and narrowly missed hitting his son, on the afternoon of March 8.

The man believes that it is a piece of a charging platform containing old batteries that NASA teams released from the orbital station in 2021. According to official predictions, these remains would burn without causing damage in the Earth’s atmosphere that day.

The news was first reported by local media winknews.com, on the 15th. “NASA has collected an object, with the collaboration of the owner of the house, and will analyze it as soon as possible at the Kennedy Space Center, located in Florida , to determine its origin”, the space agency informed AFP today.

A report from the specialized vehicle Ars Technica highlights that, although the batteries are owned by NASA, they were attached to a structure on a platform launched by the Japanese space agency, which could make accountability difficult.

Other human-generated space debris that has fallen to Earth includes part of a SpaceX Dragon capsule that struck a sheep farm in Australia in 2022.

More recently, China was criticized by NASA for allowing its giant rockets to fall to Earth.
