“ANDI am horrified by the deaths of the seven aid workers in Gaza,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at his weekly press conference in Geneva, in which he explained that WCK, founded by Spanish chef José Andrés, was collaborating with the WHO in the distribution from food to doctors and hospitals in the Palestinian enclave.

After the attack that occurred on Monday and the suspension of the WCK’s work in the Gaza Strip, which Tedros considered understandable, “many people will be left without food”, lamented the WHO director-general.

“I pay tribute to our colleagues for their work and for putting themselves in danger to serve others”, declared the head of the international organization, who had already condemned the attack on WCK on Tuesday on his official account on the X network.

This attack, he added today, “shows the enormous risk that WHO workers and their collaborators face”.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that these employees will continue to work, but this is only possible with secure access, defending an effective and transparent mechanism to reduce risks.

“We need more entry points, also in northern Gaza, as well as open roads and predictable and quick passage through security checkpoints,” he said.

The leader of the WHO health agency also reiterated his protest over the situation in Gaza’s main hospital, Al-Shifa, after months of hostilities that left it “seriously damaged and destroyed”.

“In recent days we have been trying to access the remains of the hospital, speak to staff and see what can be done, but at the moment the situation is disastrous”, he described.

“Once again: hospitals must be respected and protected, they must not be used as battlefields”, concluded Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who recalled that since the beginning of the conflict between Israeli forces and the Islamist movement Hamas, in 07 From October last year, there were more than 900 attacks on health facilities in the Palestinian territories, Israel and Lebanon, which caused 730 deaths.

An Israeli drone fired three shots on Monday night at a WCK caravan in the city of Deir al-Balah, in the center of the Palestinian enclave, despite the cars being clearly marked with the organization’s logo, according to an exclusive report published on Tuesday in the Israeli daily Haaretz.

The Israeli army’s preliminary report, published today, concludes that the attack on the WCK humanitarian convoy was not “intended to harm humanitarian workers” and was due to a “misidentification”.
