Bars and restaurants have faced difficulties due to the drop in demand for the service, difficulty in obtaining qualified labor and, in particular, the increase in food prices. This is the analysis of João Ricardo Tonin, economist at FoodCo.

According to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the month of March saw a significant increase in the prices of essential foods. Onions rose 14.3%; tomatoes, 9.8%; eggs, 4.5%; fruits, 3.7%; and milk, 2.6%.

The increase can be explained by the adverse weather conditions of recent months. The excess and lack of rain in some regions caused a reduction in food production and, consequently, an increase in prices.

Even so, the upward trend in food prices showed improvement in March. According to IBGE, the month of January registered an increase of 1.38%; February, 0.95%; and March, 0.53%.

Given this scenario, the economist recommends that bars and restaurants look for quality suppliers, in addition to applying practices that avoid food waste.

“It is a moment that requires caution. It is important to be patient and wait for the next few months. With Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day approaching, consumption is expected to increase on these dates, which could bring relief to the sector”, concludes Tonin.
