Among the many clichés and many bizarre aspects of ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ (2016), perhaps nothing beats the climax of the final clash between the two characters. About to annihilate the hero of Metropolis, the Dark Knight hesitates and regrets his actions when he discovers that their mothers have the same name: Martha.

Director of the 2016 film, filmmaker Zack Snyder revealed the origins of the scene.

In an interview with the international press reported by the ComicBook website, the director attributed the idea for the sequel to screenwriter Chris Terrio. The filmmaker classified the concept as “wonderful”.

Snyder said: “He [Terrio] said, ‘imagine Batman seeing Superman as an alien, a monster, but discovering that his mother had the same name as the mother of that creature that he doesn’t consider human. Like, this is going to mess with him.’ And then I said, ‘this will move him, it’s wonderful’”.

The director concluded by stating: “What else could he have said to Batman, holding a kryptonite spear that will be driven through his heart? Like, how could he convince you that his love for humanity is as great as Batman’s? Look, he was going to kill him in a second, literally in a second, so, like, I thought, ‘Superman needs a clever solution.'”

After ‘Batman Vs Superman’, Snyder filmed ‘Justice League’ (2017) – being removed from the project shortly before the end of filming, completed by director Joss Whedon. In 2021 he released his cut of the film, ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’, which is over four hours long.
