A revolution that changed the country completely! The 25th of April brought new concepts and took away others, but there were restaurants that saw the birth of the revolution and survive to this day, faithful to their principles. Come and see some emblems of the time, which remain the same.

Gambrinus

Everything happened along the Baixa-Restauradores axis and even with a label linked to many figures from the Old Regime, Gambrinus, an icon of haute cuisine from the 70s, housed in the bar and in its rooms, a clientele as varied as the political divisions. of the time. “Dangerous” intellectuals who, in small talk or not so much, questioned the government before the revolution lived, within those four walls, with State figures. “Legend” has it that much of what was April was questioned at the famous Ganbrinus counter, between an imperial and a nail. 50 years later, this icon of the capital remains in great shape and is recommended.

Galeto

The night in Lisbon naturally ended there. On Avenida da República, the art-deco restaurant with zigzagging counter has become, since the 1970s, a symbol of a Lisbon that wanted to modernize and stay up later. The menu includes quick dishes, such as combos, which have gone down in history and continue to win over new generations. ‘Galeto’ brought a new concept to the city of Lisbon, but it’s not the only thing that makes this restaurant so special. Opened in 1966, it was one of the restaurants that survived the changes in Portugal. A “snack bar” concept that remains current.

It’s cold

It survived history and crises, despite having closed its doors in 2017. The restaurant in Príncipe Real changed management and came back “in a big way”. What distinguishes ‘Faz Frio’ from others is that cod is always among the dishes of the day. Everything about this restaurant creates a characteristic atmosphere, from the tiles to the warm lights. Let yourself be carried away by the dishes of the day that are served in this house and if you want, you can take the opportunity to eat in a “cabinet”.

The Brazilian

It is a mythical spot, in the heart of Chiado, known by locals and non-locals alike. One of the most emblematic spaces in Lisbon is ‘A Brasileira’. Between eras, political systems and changes in national history, this restaurant has been present in all of them. It opened in 1905 with a concept not yet appreciated by the Portuguese: coffee. This was one of the meeting points for writers and artists, who between a coffee and an evening had “smooth and thoughtful” discussions.
