The first hearing regarding the Massacre of Sorriso (420 km to the north), when the mother, Cleci Calvi Cardoso, and 3 daughters Miliani, Manuela and Melissa Calvi Cardoso were killed, was rescheduled due to a scheduling conflict of the public defender assigned to defend the defendant, bricklayer Gilberto dos Anjos. The session should have taken place this week, on the 23rd, but was postponed until May.
The new date set is May 2, at 1:30 pm, in the municipality of Sorriso, in virtual mode. The change occurred because the defender of the case was appointed to act in a case hearing in Sinop (500 km to the north) in another older case, with prisoners since May 2023.
The new date was confirmed by lawyer Conrado Pavelski Neto, who represents the Calvi Cardoso family. Due to the confidentiality of the process, the hearing will be restricted to the parties involved in the process.
Regarding the progress of the case, Conrado highlighted that the defendant must be submitted to a popular jury and, possibly, it will be opened depending on the security conditions at the location. With session in Sorriso if the defendant’s defense does not request the request for relief to another district presenting plausible reasons.
“They [defensoria] You can ask for relief to be carried out in a district here in the region. But I believe that this will not happen, as any district that is created will have the same structure and the structure in Sorriso is excellent. In terms of impartiality, this cannot be controlled, […] but I believe it will be here, if the crime was here it will be here. We want the population of Sorriso to judge,” he said.
The lawyer who also accompanies Cleci Calvi Cardoso’s husband and father of the girls, Miliani, Manuela and Melissa, reported that Regivaldo Batista Cardoso is undergoing psychological counseling and is still shaken by the events. He currently resides in Sorriso and lives with his mother-in-law, mother of his wife, Cleci and grandmother of his daughters. He recently received a visit from his mother.

The victims had their throats cut and 3 of them were naked.
The bricklayer was arrested hours later and confessed to having committed the massacre. He reported to the police that he stabbed Cleci Calvi Cardoso, 46, and her 2 daughters Miliane Calvi Cardoso, 19, Manuela Calvi Cardoso, 13 and, while they were still in agony, raped them. The youngest daughter, Melissa Calvi Cardoso, 10, was killed by asphyxiation.
