The owner of the travel agency that organized the tour to Namibia, OscarTur, from Leça da Palmeira, is among the 16 injured in the accident that, on Wednesday, caused the death of two Portuguese women, reveals Correio da Manhã.

Another of the injured is the son of one of the fatal victims, the newspaper also indicates, adding that travel insurance is covering the costs of medical care, repatriation and autopsies.

The Portuguese tourists were on a tourist route when the bus they were traveling in collided with another heavy passenger bus in the Walvis Bay area, in Namibia, the Secretary of State for Communities told Lusa.

There were 22 Portuguese people in the vehicle and two women ended up dying, said the official. José Cesário also said that “there will be a third person who will have died, but he does not have Portuguese nationality”.

On Wednesday, the councilor of the Portuguese communities in the capital Windhoek clarified that the accident occurred after 3 pm local time (same time in Luxembourg), in the Kuiseb Valley, on the way to the largest sand dunes of Sossus Vley in the Namib desert.

Travel agency regrets accident

Following the accident, the travel agency reveals that it is “in direct contact with local authorities and in national territory”. The objective is to guarantee “all necessary steps to ensure the safe return of customers in the shortest possible time”, reads a statement published on the OscarTur page.

“Deeply regretting what happened”, the agency assures that it is working “on all fronts” to gather “more concrete and detailed” information.
