The fantasy saga Harry Potter is aimed at a young audience. However, sometimes she goes overboard.

When JK Rowling published her first novel in 1997, no one would have imagined that the story of the orphan boy who becomes a student of magic would trigger a hype which continues to this day. And it wasn’t just children who consumed the books and films; adults have also caught Harry Potter fever – and his adventures that aren’t exactly harmless. The second part, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, even had to be heavily edited to make it accessible to young children.

This is the story of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

For Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), summer vacation is anything but relaxing. His family is angrier than ever and he misses his friends Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint). The young wizard can’t wait to return to Hogwarts, but the house elf Dobby, who suddenly appears, wants to stop Harry from returning to school.

Because, once again, there are several dangers waiting on the estate: students are found petrified in the hallways and new teacher Gilderoy Lockhart (Kenneth Branagh) appears to be anything but qualified. To defeat evil, Harry and his friends must discover what the mysterious Chamber of Secrets is about.

Harry Potter had to be edited in Germany

Unlike the first part, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the second part was initially rated for ages 12 and over in countries like Germany. However, this would mean losing an important audience, which is why Warner Bros. cut the controversial scenes and thus managed to obtain a rating for ages 6 and up.

However, criticism of the dark film continued, and other countries only released the film at ages 12 and up. Scenes that German audiences don’t see in the shortened version include Ron being strangled by a spider in the forbidden forest, for example. Harry and Ron also have to run over a large number of skeletons on their way to the Chamber of Secrets and the final battle is much more brutal in the international version.

The film is available in the Max catalogue.
