An Italian production of six episodes debuted recently on the platform.

Italy, 19th century: a woman decides to abandon her peaceful life as a housewife to join a group of bandits and guide them on an exciting hunt for lost treasure. This is the epic plot of Na Rota do Ouro, a new historical series that arrived on Netflix last Tuesday (23).

Although much of the plot revolves around fictional events, part of the story is actually inspired by real events! The series takes place after a political and social movement that took place between 1815 and 1870 in Italy, known as Risorgimento (in Portuguese, Resurgimento).

Historical movement inspired by the Gold Route

Before the Risorgimento, Italy was divided into several territories – some operated independently, with local leaders, and others were forcibly commanded by foreign powers. With the unification process, many regions ended up, in other words, left to their own devices, being completely deprived of rights and assistance.

This provoked a lot of resistance in some communities – mainly in southern Italy, where many groups of bandits were concentrated. Dissatisfied, these groups fought against government authorities, who, of course, viewed anyone who challenged them as criminals.

Several real personalities from post-unification banditry also inspired the characters in the Netflix series. This is the case, for example, of Pietro Monaco It is Maria Oliverioa couple who became famous for looting and even kidnapping property owners, members of the government, merchants and other individuals considered important in society.

Will Na Rota do Ouro have a 2nd season?

So far, Netflix has not commented on a possible 2nd season. However, we won’t give spoilers, but the series finale definitely leaves room for another batch of episodes. In any case, we will have to be patient: the streaming platform still needs to evaluate the series’ performance before revealing any plans for its future.

The six episodes of Na Rota do Ouro are now available on Netflix.
