Two earthquakes, the largest with a magnitude of 6.1, struck Hualien County in eastern Taiwan on Saturday (local time), the island’s weather watchdog said, with no immediate reports of damage.

The tremors, which occurred within an hour of each other in the morning, shook buildings in the capital, Taipei.

The first of them had a depth of 24.9 kilometers, off the coast of Hualien, while the second, of magnitude 5.8, occurred at a depth of 18.9 kilometers and in a similar location, according to the Taiwanese climate administration. .

The island has been hit by more than a thousand aftershocks since a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Hualien earlier this month, killing 17 people.

Taiwan is located at the junction of two tectonic plates and is therefore prone to earthquakes.

More than a hundred people died in a tremor in southern Taiwan in 2016, and a 7.3 magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,000 in 1999.
