One dead and one seriously injured in an accident on Estrada Nacional 109 in the municipality of Leiria

One man died and another was seriously injured this Friday in an accident on Estrada Nacional 109, in the town of Picoto, municipality of Leiria, a road that was closed to traffic at 9pm, civil protection sources told Lusa.

According to the Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of the Leiria Region, the alert for the accident, which involved a heavy goods vehicle and a light goods vehicle, reached the authorities at 7:11 pm.

Resources from the National Republican Guard (GNR), firefighters and the National Institute of Medical Emergency rushed to the scene, with 16 operatives supported by six vehicles, said the sub-regional command.

A GNR source said that the two victims were male, and the seriously injured person was transported to the Leiria hospital.

Due to the accident, which is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Unit for Road Accidents of the Leiria Traffic Detachment, the road is closed in both directions, and there is no forecast for its reopening, added the GNR source.
