Robert Lewandowski gave an extensive interview to this Sunday’s edition of the German newspaper Bildin which he argued that he deserved to have received the Ballon d’Or in 2020, the year in which the trophy was not awarded, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
France Football is reportedly seriously considering the possibility of reversing the decision and handing over the title of best player in the world, and the Barcelona forward makes no secret of the expectation: “2020 and 2021 were the best years of my life . I scored 100 goals in 85 games.”
“Of course I would like to win the Ballon d’Or one day. It’s not that I’m angry or sad that I’m still missing that trophy. But what I feel is that it was supposed to be my turn, one of those years”, said the Polish international.
“The one for 2021 belongs to Lionel Messi. There are rumors about a retroactive award for 2020. That year was extraordinary for me, I was at the highest level, we won everything. Let’s say that, if I received the 2020 Ballon d’Or, four years later, I wouldn’t be offended,” he continued.
The 35-year-old goalscorer also named those who, in his opinion, are the best footballers on the planet at the moment: “It’s difficult to say, because we still have the European Championship and decisive games in the Champions League… “.
“But, at the moment, Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham are the most extraordinary players in the world, for me”, he added, referring to a duo who, it seems, will share a dressing room… at Real Madrid, next season .
