The new S10 arrives loaded with tradition, as we are talking about a well-known model in this segment.

But does it have what it takes to take on the Hilux, currently the best-selling midsize pickup truck?

Even without changing generations, Chevrolet brought important changes to its model, which included new equipment and some engine updates. Meanwhile, Toyota continues to use the same weapons that have been so successful so far.

Check out which one won the comparison!

The S10 remains cheaper

In its pre-sale, the new S10 2025 is offered with a reduced range, with just three versions. The cheapest is the Z71, which has a different look and costs just over R$281,000.

Going up to the intermediate LTZ version, the Chevrolet pickup costs almost R$293,000, while the position at the top of the line continues with the High Country, which costs approximately R$303,000.

To attract the public, the brand froze the prices it was already charging before the restyling, but it changed the engine: now, the 2.8 diesel delivers 207 hp and 52 kgfm, always with 4×4 traction and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

See how much the new S10 2025 costs:

  • S10 High Country CD 2.8 4×4 AT – R$ 302,900

The 2024 Hilux, in turn, features a line with more versions, something that Chevrolet’s rival will certainly do in the future. This includes the chassis and single cab versions, sold by Toyota for R$219,000 and R$226,800, respectively.

Both have manual transmission, as does the STD (double cab), which costs R$242,600. With the same body, but with automatic transmission, the pickup also has the SR, SRV and SRX Plus versions, which cost between R$272,000 and R$334,900.

They all use the 2.8 turbodiesel engine with 204 hp and 50.9 kgfm, but the Hilux GR-S is the top-of-the-line version with 224 hp and 55 kgfm, which costs almost R$373,000.

Check the prices of the Hilux 2024:

  • Hilux Chassis 2.8 MT 4×4 – R$ 219,090
  • Hilux CS 2.8 MT 4×4 – R$ 226,790

Equivalent equipment

Looking at the prices of the two pickup trucks, the only comparison with similar values is between the S10 LTZ (R$ 292,800) and the Hilux SRV (R$ 289,990). Which one offers the most?

Both are equipped with a reversing camera, LED fog lights, multifunctional steering wheel with height and depth adjustment, 18-inch wheels, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, digital A/C, electrochromic rear-view mirror and front and rear parking sensors.

But only the Chevrolet pickup has an 8″ digital panel, 11″ multimedia (the rival has only 9″), full-LED headlights, LED flashlights, face-to-face key, lane departure alert, frontal collision alert with braking emergency automatic, automatic high beams, induction charger, remote start and rain sensor.

This shows that it is much more equipped than the Toyota, which has seven airbags, dual zone air conditioning with rear outlet and automatic headlight switching as exclusive items.

Looking at the top of each range, however, we see that the Hilux SRX Plus is more equipped. It comes with JBL sound, ventilated front seats, 360º camera, ACC, marine canopy, LED headlights and taillights, steering wheel, lane change alert and collision alert with automatic braking.

Meanwhile, the S10 High Country adds the important blind spot warning and rear cross traffic alert, as well as trailer/trailer sway control and rear armrest, in addition to the items already mentioned in the LTZ.

WINNER: A tie.

More performance or savings?

Most pickup trucks in this segment use the same tactic, with the same engines for all versions. This reduces the cost for automakers, with the only change often being the increase in power in more expensive versions.

In the case of the S10, the options so far have exactly the same numbers for the 2.8 Duramax engine. With some updates, it rose from 200 to 207 hp, while torque went from 51 to 52 kgfm. The gearbox has also changed, as the pickup now has the 8-speed ZF automatic.

With this set, Chevrolet claims that its pickup has become faster, reaching 0 to 100 km/h in 9.4 seconds. Before that, the same was done in 10.4 seconds. The maximum speed has not yet been announced, but it should remain at 180 km/h.

On the Hilux side, the 2.8 turbodiesel engine delivers 204 hp in most versions, while the torque is 42.8 kgfm with manual transmission and 50.9 kgfm with the automatic transmission. This makes the pickup reach 100 km/h in 12 seconds and reach a top speed of 180 km/h.

But there is still another option under the hood, reserved for the more expensive GR-S version: with the same 2.8 engine, it delivers 224 hp and 55 kgfm. This reduces its acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h to 10.7 seconds, keeping the maximum at 180 km/h.

The consumption of the restyled S10 also improved, thanks to several modifications to the mechanical package. Even so, the Chevrolet model was the worst in the city, with the same average as the Hilux GR-S. On the road, Toyota’s most expensive version also spent the most.

At the other end, the most economical is the Hilux with manual transmission, reaching almost 12 km/h on the road. In the most important comparison, between the double cab and automatic transmission versions of each, the Japanese one was much better in urban areas, but narrowly lost on the highway.

Consumption S10 2.8 AT Hilux 2.8 MT Hilux 2.8 AT Hilux GR-S
City – diesel 9.5 10.4 10.1 9.5
Road – diesel 11.4 11.8 11.3 10.7

WINNER: A tie.

The S10 remains spacious

The measurements of the two pickups are very similar. The S10’s biggest advantage appears in length (5.36 x 5.32), but it also wins in width (1.87 x 1.85) and wheelbase (3.09 x 3.08). The Hilux is taller (1.81 x 1.78).

In practice, the Chevrolet pickup actually offers more legroom for those traveling in the second row, in addition to having two USB ports. The seat also has an armrest, but without cup holders.

In the Hilux, the space is a little reduced compared to the rival, but it has its advantages: more comfortable seats, armrest with two can holders, safety strap on the B column (facilitating access) and A/C outlet rear, something very important when traveling.

In the bucket, Chevrolet says that the S10 carries up to 1,329 liters or 1,000 kg, while Toyota says that the Hilux has a capacity of 1,000 liters or 1,000 kg.

In short, the S10 has more space in the rear seat and greater volumetric capacity in the bucket, which ends up surpassing the superior comfort that the Hilux offers for rear passengers.

WINNER: S10.

Toyota charges a lot for reviews

The two pickup trucks are sold with a 5-year warranty, something that Toyota already practiced before Chevrolet, which increased the coverage period after this latest restyling. Furthermore, both models are serviced every 10,000 km or 12 months.

Unfortunately, S10 2015 has not yet released the values for its revisions, so we have to use the previous table. Taking into account that the engine is the same, it is possible that it will continue with a similar table.

In any case, this new product should continue to cost less than the Hilux after 60,000 km. Currently, its owners will spend almost R$9,900, while its Japanese rival charges more than R$11,200 in the same period.

Reviews S10 Hilux Hilux GR-S

Hilux sells much more

Chevrolet’s expectation is to significantly improve sales of the S10 in 2024, when the pickup will have almost the entire year with its new features. And this is really necessary, as until March it had only 5,379 units, ranking 5th in the segment.

In the same period, the Hilux reached 10,211, occupying 2nd place and being very close to the leader (and cheapest) Fiat Toro, which accumulated 10,219 registrations.

In 2023, the fight between Chevrolet and Toyota pickups also had a similar result. The Hilux ended the year in second place, with 46,200 units on the streets, while the S10 was in 4th place with 25,966 units.

WINNER: Hilux.

Conclusion

The new S10 has already achieved its first victory in the Brazilian market.

In this comparison, it presented more attractive prices, has more internal space for its occupants and also has cheaper revisions.

The Hilux only won in sales, but this is relative when we remember that the Chevrolet pickup truck has just arrived.

We still had a tie in two categories: equipment and engine, where the S10 drives more, but the Hilux drinks less.
