Message from the World Christian Workers Movement for May 1

Lisbon, April 29, 2024 (Ecclesia) – The World Movement of Christian Workers (MMTC) wrote a message for May 1st, Labor Day, highlighting that humanity “is experiencing its most dramatic moment” since the industrial revolution .

“Humanity is experiencing its most dramatic moment since the industrial revolution of the 18th century, and life on the planet has never been so threatened”, reads the message sent to the ECCLESIA Agency.

This year, the document was written by the MTC (Brazilian Christian Workers Movement) and has the motto: “Every human being has the right to live with dignity through work”.

The LOC/MTC of Portugal also salutes “all workers who contribute to the construction of a more just and fraternal world and fight for more justice and rights for all”.

Consumerism “implemented by the capitalist mode of production”, the “accelerated destruction of the Common Home”, the concentration of wealth “in the hands of 1% of the world’s families, the advance of imperialism and its war industry, the investment of trillions of dollars to develop their domains and appropriate the natural resources of the people of Africa, Asia and Latin America are affecting people’s lives”, adds the note.

Faced with this “scary” scenario, working class leaders “look for ways out”, because they understand that this “is a turning point in history”.

On May Day it is essential to “mobilize men and women in a fight that goes beyond labor rights: The fight is now for Life”, it reads.

Times “are difficult, life is in danger”, but the future of humanity is in “the minds and hands of organized and united workers”, adds the message.
