O Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the only way to protect Russian territory from Ukrainian attacks is to create a ‘buffer zone’ that puts Russian regions out of reach of Ukrainian fire.
“In the context of (Ukrainian) drone attacks and bombing of our territory (public facilities, residential buildings) measures must be taken to protect these territories”, he began by stressing, in statements to journalists after Russian President Vladimir Putin had raised the possibility of creating this zone in a speech after his re-election on Sunday.
According to Peskov, the Russians “can only be protected by creating a kind of ‘buffer zone’, so that all the means that the enemy uses to attack are out of reach.”
It should be noted that after winning the presidential elections in Russia, Putin clarified that the creation of a ‘buffer zone’ had not been ruled out. “I do not exclude that, taking into account the tragic events taking place, we will be forced at some point, when we consider it appropriate, to create the ‘buffer zone’ in the territories currently under the Kyiv regime”, stressed the Russian leader, quoted by that agency news.
Putin declined to give further details, but noted that the zone could be large enough to prevent foreign-made weapons from reaching Russian territory.
