Couple was at a bus stop when the infrastructure was hit by a car. They were celebrating their wedding anniversary and were going to spend the day with their children at the zoo

A 38-year-old Portuguese woman, her husband and her eldest son, just a year and a half old, died on Saturday when a car skidded and crashed into the bus stop where the family was waiting for transport, in West Portal, in the State of São Francisco, U.S.

Matilde Moncada Ramos Pinto was still transported to the hospital, but ended up succumbing to her injuries. Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, her 40-year-old husband of Brazilian nationality, and her son Joaquim Ramos Pinto de Oliveira, aged one and a half, died at the scene.

The youngest child, a three-month-old baby, was transported alive to the hospital, where he is in critical condition and has a poor prognosis.

The accident occurred last Saturday at around 12:13 (05:13, mainland Portugal time), after a 78-year-old SUV driver, identified as Mary Fong Lau, crashed. The woman was eventually arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide, driving the wrong way, dangerous driving and speeding.

Witnesses to the accident, cited by CBS News, say that the car was traveling at a speed of between 80 and 120 kilometers per hour. Fong Lau escaped unharmed, with only minor injuries.

Matilde left Portugal at the age of 18 and worked as a film producer. The partner was creative director at Apple.

The couple lived in San Francisco and were celebrating their wedding anniversary. Matilde and Diego intended to spend the day with their two children at the zoo.

“A profound tragedy. The San Francisco Police Department expresses its condolences to the victims, their families and loved ones, to everyone who witnessed what happened and to the first responders”, can be read in a publication in the X of the San Francisco Police.
