UA couple accidentally sent their family cat in an Amazon return box from Utah to California, in the United States. The animal was found six days later, more than a thousand kilometers away.
According to Carrie Clark, Galena the cat mysteriously disappeared on April 10 and, for a week, friends and family looked for her at home, in the neighborhood and throughout the surrounding community and shared appeals on social media and on posters. Unsuccessfully.
“Galena is a huge emotional support to me and has helped me overcome many health issues over the past six years,” Clark told US station KSL TV. “The anxiety and stress of not knowing what had happened to him was excruciating.”
A week later, on April 17, Clark received a message that Galena’s microchip had been checked that afternoon. Minutes later, he received a call from a veterinarian telling him that the cat was at the establishment. The problem? It was more than a thousand kilometers away.
“At first I didn’t believe her and thought it was a prank,” Clark said, adding that the vet told her the cat had been found inside an Amazon box along with five pairs of boots.
“I ran to tell my husband that Galena had been found and we were devastated when we realized that she had jumped into a huge box that we had shipped the previous Wednesday,” Clark said. “The box was a ‘try before you buy’ box and was full of steel toe work boots.”
Galena was in the box for six days without food or water until she was found in a warehouse by Brandy, an Amazon employee, who took care of her until she took her to the vet the next day.
“After speaking with the vet, I was able to speak to Brandy on the phone!”, said the owner. “She was so relieved to know that we loved Galena and were desperately looking for her.”
The couple hurried to pick up the cat and booked a flight for the next day. They brought him food, his favorite snacks and towels that smelled like home.
“It was a spectacular reunion! Galena instantly stopped shaking and relaxed in my arms when I held her again,” said Clark. “Although she was thinner and a little dehydrated, her blood test was completely normal and she was completely unharmed!”
Speaking to the North American press, Galena’s owner urged all owners to microchip their pets and “triple check their Amazon boxes.”
