Six people remain hospitalized after the fire that killed ten people in the center of Porto Alegre this Friday (26). According to a report from the Municipal Health Department, one of the patients is in serious condition.

Another would be in moderate condition, and the rest would be stable. There were 15 people injured in the fire, which occurred in a boarding house for homeless people. The origin of the flames is being investigated.

Five of the dead were identified, but their names were not released. There are four men and one woman.

After the fire, Porto Alegre City Hall announced that it will form a task force to check the situation of all 23 spaces in the city where there are vacancies to accommodate vulnerable people.

The 23 spaces belong to the same company responsible for Pousada Garoa, where this Friday’s fire broke out. They offer, in total, 400 places for homeless people based on an emergency contract signed in 2022 with the municipal management.

In this program, beneficiaries receive a voucher from FASC (Social Assistance and Citizenship Foundation) that is valid for 15 days and can be used to occupy a place in pensions.

The building caught fire around 2am on Friday, and the situation was only fully controlled around 5am. The fire occurred near a gas station, which further frightened residents neighboring the building and drivers passing by.

The building was destroyed, and the bodies of the victims were found charred, according to firefighters. The suspicion is that most of them were sleeping.

The bodies were taken to the IML. Names and ages had not been released until Friday night. Three days of official mourning were declared.
