New factory in Europe is expected to produce batteries for one million electric vehicles per year

Europe’s dependence on China largely lies in the need for batteries and their components. Shortening this problem, Northvolt’s new factory in Germany will have the capacity to produce enough batteries to power the needs of one million electric cars per year.

China has a great advantage over Europe, as it ensures a very oil supply of components, as well as battery production. Because it is not yet at that level, the West depends largely on Chinese companies.

Reducing this dependence is investment in battery factories and new forms of mobility.

Northvolt wants to help Europe reduce its dependence on batteries

Yesterday, Northvolt officially started the construction of a new structure near the city of Heide, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and is expected to initially create a total of 3,000 direct jobs and a few more indirect jobs.

The company will invest 4.5 billion euros, with the aim of starting to produce batteries in 2026. According to estimates, the facility will have the capacity to produce enough batteries to power the needs of one million electric cars per year.

It's great to get this program going. We are deeply grateful for the support of customers, investors and public stakeholders to create this flagship project for the global climate transition.

For us, Heide is like our home […].

Said Peter Carlsson (2nd position on the right, in the photo below), CEO and co-founder of Northvolt, according to an official statement from the company.

Northvolt Germany CEO Christofer Haux (on the right, in the photo above) revealed that he is “incredibly proud” of his team, “who have shown so much passion for this factory, from the first site selection talks two years ago, through for all the planning and conception, until today”.

And now the real work begins. I also want to thank the people of Dithmarschen. It is unprecedented in Germany that a large-scale industrial project, built on 110 hectares of land, has such strong support from the local population.

Northvolt will aim for the new factory to be sustainable and have a positive impact on local communities, meaning it will use treated wastewater from the region for cooling. The heat generated during production will be transferred to a local grid, which will provide low-cost heating to families in the city of Heide.

Furthermore, it envisages the construction of a facility to recycle used batteries, which can be transformed into new packs, further improving the emissions footprint of the entire process.

Investments like Northvolt's are of strategic importance for our country and for Europe. Germany was, is and will continue to be a country with a strong industrial base. And the production of good cars beyond the combustion engine continues to constitute the backbone of our industrial sector. For this we need battery cells made in Germany, made in Europe.

Therefore, it is good news for our entire country that battery cells produced in an environmentally friendly way could be manufactured for one million cars per year in the future.

He congratulated the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz (3rd position on the left, in the photo above).
