But how does this service work?

Let's consider that you have a Raspberry PI, connected to the Wi-Fi network at home and it has the private address, so it is only reachable on the private network. However, as a gateway, it is associated with the router's private address (e.g. which allows it to “exit” to the Internet through the public address that is also associated with the router. It is this public address that we will use to reach our equipment from the outside (note that it is also possible to assign a public address directly to a device – find out more here).
