Will used electric cars be as cheap or cheaper than diesel cars in Europe?

-

According to the most recent report from a portal specializing in used cars, the answer is yes: second-hand electric cars could soon be as cheap or cheaper than diesel cars.

Over the last year, and as we have been following here, the prices of new electric cars fell sharply, in a decline driven by the price war in the sector.

The lower prices of new cars have a direct impact on the price of second-hand models, which is why this is also being reduced substantially, approaching the average value of models powered by fossil fuels in Europe.

This is the conclusion of the latest report from the specialized used car portal Autoscout24, cited by Handelsblatt, which analyzed the evolution of the value of cars sold on its platform.

As noted, in March, electric cars had an average cost of 29,548 euros, a value 26% below that recorded in the same period last year, and very close to the stable average of 28,115 euros for used fossil fuel cars.

In purely mathematical terms, it's only a matter of time before used electric car prices fall in line with used car prices in general, or even fall below them.

Said Stefan Schneck, sales director for Germany at Autoscout24, assuming that the pressure on the prices of electric mobility brands will remain high throughout the year.

Electrical

According to the portal specializing in used cars, four of the ten most sought-after used electric cars have dropped in price by around 30% compared to the first quarter of 2023. Among them is the electric version of the Smart ForTwo, the Audi e-tron 50 and 55 quattro, and the Volkswagen ID.3.

This price approximation should not be surprising. For analysts, there are several reasons that justify this, namely, the strong incentives that manufacturers and governments have implemented to motivate the purchase of electric cars, and technological developments, in terms of batteries and software, which make electric cars obsolete more quickly. than models with an internal combustion engine.
