A 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were arrested by the Civil Police of Ceará (PCCE) in the municipalities of Aquiraz and Eusébio, in Greater Fortaleza. The identities were not revealed.

The duo had outstanding arrest warrants after being convicted of the robbery that ended in the death of Canadian businessman Walter Max Voigtlander, aged 85.

The case took place on December 11, 2019. The man was sentenced to 22 years and six months in prison, while the woman must serve a 20-year sentence. Both were convicted in November 2020, along with a third person, another woman, also involved in the crime.

The accused were arrested after the robbery. According to the Secretariat of Public Security and Social Defense of Ceará (SSPDS-CE), the man and woman are in a police unit and at the disposal of the justice system.

Despite this, the agency did not say why the pair were free, even after being convicted at the end of 2020. There is also no information regarding the other woman who was also convicted.

Remember the case

The crime that occurred in 2019 was elucidated and resolved in less than a year, even in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. At the time, the robbery was surprising due to the brutal way in which the businessman’s body was found.

According to police information, Walter Max Voigtlander was a businessman and had business in the region, and lived alone on the farm in the district of Olho D’Água, 20 km from Eusébio’s headquarters.

“He was tied up, lying face down, his hands were tied around a pillar, his feet were also tied, his mouth was covered and his eyes were blindfolded,” said the case delegate at the time, Everaldo Lima, to Green Seas System.

The body was in an advanced stage of decomposition, and the suspicion is that the robbery took place a week before the day the businessman was found.

The accused was known to the victim

During investigations, the police reached the son of the caretaker of the farm next to the victim’s. He had the help of his girlfriend and a friend to commit the robbery.

In addition to killing the Canadian businessman, the police say that the three, in testimony, claimed to have stolen R$139 in cash and an old cell phone device.

The elderly man was recognized in Eusébio for riding a bicycle and maintaining a commercial establishment in the city center, in addition to properties in the region.

The Canadian businessman maintained the habit of carrying cash, which was one of the factors that contributed to the caretaker’s son planning the crime, as he was experiencing financial difficulties.
