After placing an “editor’s note” on two photographs provided by the British Royal Family, the agency Getty Images is once again publishing an editor’s note because of the video, released in March, in which the Princess of Wales shares her diagnosis of cancer. The agency warns that that pre-recorded clip may deviate from Getty’s policies, without justifying the reason.

The statement, cited by Vanity Fair: “Editor’s note: This clip was provided by a third party organization and may not comply with the editorial policy of the Getty Images. A spokesperson for the agency declined to provide further details, explaining only that: “Getty Images includes a standard editors’ note for distributing content provided by third-party organizations.”

However, this “editor’s note” is not in all the images or videos that the agency receives, namely from Buckingham Palace, and the Vanity Fair gives as an example the images of Charles’ coronation or a portrait taken by royal photographer Hugo Bernand. The note was added to the photograph that Kensington Palace published on Mother’s Day, which is celebrated three Sundays before Easter, where the princess is with her three children; and in the photo Kate took of Queen Elizabeth II with some of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, at Balmoral.

So, not only did Getty speak out, but Reuters also decided to remove the images that would have been manipulated by the princess herself and reviewed the images provided by the Windsors. Kate issued an apology for the manipulation of the images: “Like many amateur photographers, I occasionally experiment with editing.”

A few days later, on March 22, the future queen was seen in a video, sitting on a garden bench, alone, announcing that she had cancer, that she was undergoing preventive chemotherapy and was recovering well. In January, Kate underwent “scheduled abdominal surgery.” Then, it was announced that she would return to work after Easter, which did not happen. Now, Getty Images has decided to add an “editor’s note” to the video, not justifying the decision.
