The princes of Denmark did so in May 2023, when they welcomed their first child, Gustav Albrecht, and they did it again this year. The baby came into the world on April 26th, in the United States.

“A spokesperson confirms that Their Highnesses Prince Gustav and Princess Carina have become parents for the second time. They had a daughter. Everyone is well and very happy. The baby was born on Friday, April 26th.”, reads a statement from the Royal House released by the local press. The girl’s name has not yet been revealed.

It is important to note that although Gustav and Carina, 54, have been together for two decades, they had to wait to walk down the aisle due to a ‘rule’ left in the will by the prince’s grandfather, according to the Vanitatis.

They got married in June 2022. This restriction meant they had to postpone their desire to become parents. Therefore, after consulting the family, they decided to resort to surrogacy. The princes of Denmark reside in Germany, more specifically in Berleburg Castle. In this country, surrogacy is illegal and only the woman who gives birth to the baby is recognized as a mother, as long as there is no adoption by another woman.

According to the Diez Minutesin the United States surrogate pregnancy is permitted and legislated, whereas in Denmark it is permitted as long as it is ‘altruistic’ and meets specific conditions: there must be no type of financial compensation, the eggs must be those of the surrogate mother and not Assisted reproduction techniques can be used.

This is the second pregnancy by a surrogate for Danish royalty. The first was last year, when Gustav Albrecht was born.
