Duarte Gomes’ analogy to explain two moves of Light

Arbitration commentator A BOLA analyzes moves between Di María and Júnior Pius and between Coates and Rafa

Sometimes the best way to try to explain some things is through analogy, practical examples that can help us to have another perspective and view of the facts.

Theme:

There still seems to be some confusion about when and how certain physical contacts between players should be punished: who causes what, how, when, under what circumstances and with what consequences.

Yesterday’s play, between Coates and Rafa, was a clear example of this, as was another in Luz between Di Maria and Júnior Pius (SL Benfica/GD Chaves, from the previous round).

Let’s look at the analogies then:

SITUATION – 1

– Imagine that you are running and as you pass another person (doing the same), you touch their leg with your foot, falling to the ground.

Repair:

– That person didn’t do anything. He did not disturb your movement, did not invade your space, did not make any movement with his feet and/or legs that caused you to trip or fall.

Question:

– Who is responsible for your fall?

Response:

– It’s yours, dear reader.

Why?

– Because you deliberately and/or involuntarily promoted contact with someone who did nothing to harm you, affect or disrupt your race.

SITUATION – 2

– You are running at speed and when you pass another person (also running), they stretch one of their legs to your side, in front of your running path. Result? You fall because you trip over an unexpected “obstacle” that has appeared before you.

Question:

– Who is responsible for this fall?

Response:

– It belongs to this person, dear reader, because it was he who initiated a risky movement towards your space, where you were passing, causing you to lose your balance and fall. It wasn’t you who touched her. She was the one who positioned herself so that the impact was inevitable.

Challenge:

– Can the dear reader have enough lucidity and distance to understand the difference between the two situations? They are apparently similar, but in fact they are complete opposites.

I think we continue to watch football with too much heart, without putting reason in the right place. And that is perhaps why we deduce that identical bids are treated differently.

No! Identical bids receive identical treatment, but different bids must and must have different responses!

That some passionate fans can’t see this reality, that’s okay.

Now that people with other obligations and responsibilities are unaware of the technical differences between similar situations, well… that’s a different story.
