The number of dengue cases registered in Campinas (SP) from January to March is already the highest in the city’s history for a first quarter, according to data from the Department of Epidemiological Surveillance (Devisa). If you consider the total number of infections, This year’s epidemic is the third largest in the historical series in the city, which began to be recorded in 1998.

According to the metropolis’ arbovirus panel, which is updated daily, Campinas adds, as of this Monday (25), 27.9 thousand cases. The index is still below the numbers recorded in 2014 (42.4 thousand) and 2015 (65.7 thousand), when the municipality had the two worst epidemics in history.

In relation only to the data recorded in the period from January to March, this year’s records are already the largest in the historical series, even surpassing the epidemics of 2014 and 2015, which, in total numbers, are still ahead.

The municipal government does not have data separated by quarter for the period from 1998 to 2011. However, the administration confirmed that, in none of these years, the number from January to March exceeded 11 thousand cases. See below a survey of the period from 2012 onwards:

The balance of the first quarter, even though there are still six days left until the end of March, indicates the possibility that, this year, Campinas will reach a record number of cases, surpassing 2015, and have the worst dengue scenario in history. The city hall’s own projection is that the city will reach or surpass the 100,000 infected mark.

Among the actions are directing financial resources and agility in the purchase of inputs, serum and materials for nebulization, in addition to paying overtime and possibly hiring staff to reinforce assistance.

When to seek care?

Previously, the city hall’s recommendation was that residents seek medical attention when the patient had a fever and two other associated symptoms, such as headache, body pain, nausea, vomiting, spots on the body, joint pain and pain behind the eyes.

Patients who, in addition to fever, experience dizziness, severe abdominal pain, frequent vomiting, cold sweat and bleeding should go to an emergency room or Emergency Care Unit (UPA). The Health Department emphasizes that residents should not underestimate the symptoms.
