A hypertension, or high blood pressure, is characterized by elevated blood pressure, generally above 140×90 mmHg, popularly known as “14 by 9”. Data from World Health Organization (WHO), show that 50.7 million Brazilians aged between 30 and 79 suffer from this condition. This problem is often asymptomatic, but it can trigger cardiovascular complications and kidney failure. However, it is possible to control it with appropriate treatment.

How to measure: Blood pressure measurement is performed in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and involves two readings: systolic blood pressure, which indicates the pressure in the arteries during the heartbeat, and diastolic blood pressure, which represents the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats. heart is at rest between beats.

When is it high? According to guidelines from Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC), blood pressure is considered to be high when it reaches or exceeds 140 per 90 millimeters of mercury. Furthermore, measurements are classified into different degrees of severity, being degrees 1, 2 and 3, according to the levels observed.

Classification. Cardiologist Fernando Lamego highlights the following categories to classify blood pressure: Normal: up to 120×80 mmHg; Prehypertension: 120-139×80-89 mmHg; Stage 1 hypertension: 140-159×90-99 mmHg; Stage 2 hypertension: 160×100 mmHg; Stage 3 hypertension: greater than 160×100 mmHg.

Diagnosis and treatment of hypertension may vary depending on other risk factors and individual medical conditions. If you are concerned about your blood pressure, it is recommended to seek medical advice for a more accurate and appropriate assessment for your case”, warns the cardiologist in an interview with Eu Atleta.

However, the presence of high blood pressure at a given time does not necessarily imply chronic hypertension. According to guidelines from the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC), it is common for blood pressure to be slightly higher during the day than at night. Ideal values ​​should not exceed 135×85 mmHg during the day and 120×80 mmHg at night.
