Magazines, websites and social networks are always sharing tricks for having a flat stomach, toning up or losing those extra pounds. The truth is that excess fat goes far beyond aesthetic issues, having implications for health, increasing the risk of various problems, such as cardiovascular disease, stroke or heart failure.

When we focus only on triglyceride levels, the main fat in our body that functions as an energy reserve, when they are too high, they are associated with the risk of acute inflammation in the pancreas and atherosclerosis, a vascular disease characterized by loss of elasticity of the arterial wall, explains the MSD Manuals website.

Several studies warn that a good way to control triglycerides and body fat is through a healthy lifestyle, with regular exercise, low alcohol consumption and a diet rich in fiber and low in sugar.

Now a study carried out by the University of North Carolina shows that drinking kombucha can also help reduce accumulated fat and lower triglycerides.

Kombucha is an ancient fermented drink, made from black or green tea, to which sugar and a culture of bacteria and yeast called SCOBY are added. It is considered a probiotic drink.

Kombucha has already been widely studied, and several scientific articles suggest that this drink can help in the treatment of various diseases, such as diabetes, liver problems and even stomach problems. It may also have benefits for the heart, lowering cholesterol levels and lowering blood pressure.

Other studies also point out some negative effects of kombucha, as it can accelerate the heartbeat and cause heartburn.

What the new study says about the benefits of kombucha for eliminating fat

This new study by researchers at the University of North Carolina used earthworms to study the impact of kombucha on the body, explains Medical News Today.

Scientists were able to realize that after ingesting kombucha, there was a process in the worms’ organism similar to what happens when fasting. The probiotics colonized the intestines, causing the metabolism to react as if it had been without food for several hours.

It was also possible to notice that animals with a diet that includes probiotic microbes such as those found in kombucha have a reduction in the amount of accumulated fat and a decrease in triglyceride levels.

The results were obtained in the laboratory and, therefore, the scientists, cited by the newspaper Medical News Today, warn that more studies are essential to conclude what the true impact of kombucha is on the human body.
