Patients face a 5-hour wait for care at UPA in Campo Grande

Images from the UPA of the Coronel Antonino neighborhood show the chaotic situation in which the place finds itself. With the elderly, children and adults waiting for care, the queue for a medical appointment is already hours long. See the video above.

Wania Cardoso Vicente, aged 41, accompanies her granddaughter, aged 5, at the UPA. The girl arrived at the scene with her mother at 11am. With the clock ticking and the child’s fever rising, the family has been waiting for medical care for more than 5 hours. Until 4pm, the patient had only undergone medical screening.

A consultation with the doctor is still expected, according to Wania’s report. With the elderly, children and adults gathered in the UPA lobby, the wait is inevitable. The cook reports on the chaotic situation she faces in the unit.

“I feel uncomfortable with this neglect at this moment. With this virus that is in Campo Grande, there could be more doctors on duty”, reports the cook.

O g1 contacted the municipal health department (Sesau) to find out if the overcrowding situation extends to other UPA and Basic Health Units (UBS) in the capital. In a note, the press office reported that the UPA in the University neighborhood is also facing an increase in the number of patients.

Regarding Colonel Antonino’s UPA, Sesau reported that “at the moment the unit is working with 6 clinicians and 4 pediatricians. There was an absence of two pediatricians who presented a certificate. The emergency coordination is sending the support team to reinforce the service. There is no waiting longer than 4 hours.”

On Tuesday (23), Sesau reported that Campo Grande is facing outbreaks of intestinal and respiratory viruses. The number of visits to public health centers in the capital increased by 46% among adults and 28% in the pediatric ward, compared to patients on April 21st and 22nd.

Given the increase in the number of people seeking medical care at Basic Health Units (UBS) and Emergency Care Units (UPA), Sesau warns of an outbreak and reinforces guidelines regarding care and ways to prevent diseases.

According to the municipal secretary of Health, Rosana Leite de Melo, at this time it is necessary to reinforce personal hygiene and respiratory etiquette, associated with vaccination against Flu and Covid-19. The secretary also warns about the use of a mask for symptomatic patients.

“The use of facial protection masks continues to be recommended for people with respiratory symptoms, individuals with risk factors, especially immunosuppressed people, the elderly, pregnant women and people with multiple comorbidities”, he adds.
