Hurricane Danielle was heading close to the United Kingdom, passing alongside the Azores. But this Thursday, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), it turned around and will hit the Iberian Peninsula, already in storm mode — losing the category of Category 1 hurricane.

Over the weekend, the storm will cause “a significant change in the weather in mainland Portugal”, warns the institute. “On the 11th [domingo] the approach of a frontal surface is expected, associated with the extratropical cyclone Danielle and the transport of a mass of hot and very humid air, which should bring persistent precipitation, sometimes intense and occasionally accompanied by thunder, from the afternoon on the north coast and Center, gradually progressing to the interior and South region during the night of the 11th to the 12th of September”, reads, in the IPMA communiqué.

In the following days, heavy rains are expected to continue, accompanied by thunderstorms, at least until the 13th, Tuesday.

The wind will also be constant, reaching up to 40 km/h on the North and Center coast on the 12th and up to 50 km/h in the highlands, with gusts that can reach 70 km/h. The sea wave will also increase, with waves from west/northwest between 2.5 and 3.5 meters in height.

Hurricane Danielle, the first in the North Atlantic, has always had a very uncertain trajectory, confusing meteorologists.
