Lions lose (1-5) in Oliveira de Azeméis. Haven’t won the Cup since 1990

Sporting is out of the Portuguese Cup, after losing (1-5) in the quarter-finals at Oliveirense. The premier event has been a thorn in the side of the lions since the sport’s return to Alvalade. The last achievement dates back to 1990.

After the 4-1 victory against Barcelona, in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals, Sporting suffered its first major setback this season. Alejandro Domínguez’s team were runners-up in last season’s Portuguese Cup. Edo Bosch’s team, despite not having won anything yet, confirms their good season: they lead the championship (equal on points with FC Porto), are in the ‘quarters’ of the Champions League and in the final four of the Cup.

In Oliveira de Azeméis, Argentine Lucas Martínez was the great figure, scoring four goals. The experienced forward from Oliveirense, World Champion with Argentina, scored twice in the 1st half, with a goal from João Souto in the middle. After the break, Diogo Abreu extended the lead and Lucas Martínez scored two more goals.

Oliveirense is the first team to qualify for the final four of the Cup that will take place in Barcelos, on April 27th and 28th.
