The PSP and the PJ are investigating the disappearance of a couple of French tourists on the north coast of the island of Madeira, and a search operation has been underway by land and sea since Saturday, a police source said this Monday.

“We don’t have a concrete clue that tells us where the tourists went”, explained the source from the Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) of Madeira, which coordinates the operation, in which the Judiciary Police (PJ) are also involved, the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Madeira Operational Command, the Regional Civil Protection Service, the Maritime Authority and Sanas – Madeiran Association for Relief at Sea.

The tourists, a man and a woman of French nationality, aged 58 and 56, were last seen in the Calhau area, in the municipality of São Vicente, north coast of the island, where they were staying.

According to the PSP, the alert was given on Saturday afternoon by the couple’s daughter, who that day chose to rest in the accommodation, while her parents decided to go for a walk nearby.

The police report that a witness at the scene indicated that he saw the tourists walking towards Porto Moniz, a municipality adjacent to São Vicente, on the north coast.

The search operation began on Saturday and was resumed on Sunday, using the PSP Search, Rescue, Relief and Mountain Rescue brigade, the Forestry Police and Sanas, having been interrupted at 7:00 pm.

“We resumed the searches this morning and we have nothing concrete,” said the PSP, adding that the Judicial Police was associated with the operation.
