The search for the tourist couple missing since Saturday on the north coast of the island of Madeira continues today, said a PSP source, highlighting that they focus on the coastal area, by land and sea.

Speaking to Lusa, a PSP source said that, after searches in mountainous areas, today the work is essentially concentrated in the coastal area, between Fajã da Areia and the center of the municipality of São Vicente.

The PJ was involved in the operation to investigate a possible criminal situation, although, so far, there are no suspicions.

According to the PSP, there are still no clues as to the whereabouts of the missing tourists.

The operation is being coordinated by the Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) of Madeira, in which the Judiciary Police (PJ), the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Madeira Operational Command, the Regional Service of Civil Protection and the Maritime Authority.

The tourists, a man and a woman of French nationality, aged 58 and 56, were last seen in the Calhau area, in the municipality of São Vicente, north coast of the island, where they were staying.

According to the PSP, the alert was given on Saturday afternoon by the couple’s daughter, who that day chose to rest in the accommodation, while her parents decided to go for a walk nearby.

The police report that a witness at the scene indicated that he saw the tourists walking towards Porto Moniz, a municipality adjacent to São Vicente, on the north coast.
