Father’s Day is a date that annually honors fathers and varies depending on the country. In Portugal it is celebrated on March 19th.

To celebrate the date, Escola do Prado invited parents to a different afternoon. There was music, gifts and also awareness raising activities.

Luísa Queirós, coordinator of the Eco-Schools program at that educational establishment, explained to VTM that “it is now normal for us to call parents to school on this day. This year we chose to raise awareness about fires, obesity, invasive plants and trafficking in exotic species”.

The decision came “after we carried out an audit survey of the Eco-Escolas program, in which we noticed that some parents were not well informed about these topics”, reveals the educator, admitting that “parents and children end up learning”.

This day “is an opportunity for us to get together and for parents to realize that at school we learn much more than reading and writing”, he states, highlighting that “it also serves for parents to spend quality time with their children because in today’s society this it’s rare. The kids spend most of the day at school and at night it’s practically dinner and bed.”

Diogo Ramos was one of the parents who participated in this activity. Father of four children, he speaks of this day as “a day like the others, but special”.

“I take a math game from here, which they played with the teacher, and now the son will play with his father, at home”, he says, noting that “I try to be a present father and spend as much time as possible with them”.

One of the sons, Francisco, aged 9, says that “I like playing football with my dad” and takes the opportunity to say that he is “really cool”.

The youngest, Laura, aged 6, also had her father in this activity. She took photographs to send to her mother and “I made a paperweight to offer her”.

“My father is very loving. He tends to tickle me a lot and give me a lot of kisses,” he says.

On this day, Escola do Prado prepared activities for parents and children and created a song for the occasion. There was also a snack for everyone.
