According to the party secretariat, out of a total of 4,388 registered voters, Albuquerque received 2,246 votes and Correia received 1,854.

“This election was very important because it mobilized people. People were free to choose the orientation and leader they wanted for the party and this gave PSD Madeira a new, important and dynamic dynamic. came above all to legitimize my leadership and my political status”, declared the winner in front of journalists.

Miguel Albuquerque also said that he is certain that when elections go ahead, “if applicable”, the PSD will continue “to be the leading party in Madeira”.

“We are not afraid of going to elections and we are prepared, as we have always been, to do so”he insisted, recalling that since 2015 his leadership has not lost any elections.

Speaking to journalists in Funchal, Manuel António Correia thanked everyone who “did an extraordinary job” in his campaign, highlighting that “a large part of the activists” listened to him and agreed with him.

This was the second time that Miguel Albuquerque beat Manuel António Correia in an internal dispute for the presidency of the party, with the first confrontation taking place in 2014, to choose the successor to the historic leader Alberto João Jardim.

This Thursday’s election took place following the political crisis caused by the dismissal of Miguel Albuquerque from the position of president of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP), in January, after being named a defendant in a judicial investigation into suspected corruption in the archipelago .

Miguel Albuquerque, aged 62, is a lawyer and has on his political CV the presidency of the Chamber of Funchal (1994-2013) and the Regional Government of Madeira, since 2015.

He resigned on January 26thafter the PAN’s only deputy refused to comply with the parliamentary influence agreement that guaranteed the absolute majority of the PSD/CDS coalition in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira.
