By delegation from the State, Metropolitano de Lisboa will carry out studies, surveys and other ancillary work necessary to launch the contracting procedure for the extension of the Metro Sul do Tejo network to Costa de Caparica. This decision arises from Ordinance no. 410/2024/2, signed by the Secretary of State for the Budget and the Secretary of State for Urban Mobility and published in the Diário da República 2nd series, of March 21, 2024.

Metropolitano de Lisboa was the public entity chosen by the Government to carry out these works due to its national and international experience in this field and given the nature of the project, the degree of complexity of the procedures inherent to the implementation of investments in public transport systems on site. (TCSP) of high capacity and the deadlines associated with financing under the Climate Action and Sustainability Program (PACS).

By the same Ordinance, Metropolitano de Lisboa was authorized to carry out the corresponding expenditure, up to a total amount of €1,650,000.00 (one million, six hundred and fifty thousand euros), an amount to which VAT is added at the legal rate in force.

The extension of the surface light rail system from the south bank of the Tagus to Costa de Caparica is one of the TCSP system projects in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area considered a priority by the State and is included in Portugal’s Climate Action and Sustainability Program (PACS). 2030. The PACS foresees an allocation of 3.1 billion euros, financed by the Cohesion Fund, intended to finance projects within the priorities defined for this Program, including sustainable urban mobility.

The project aims to promote a quick and structuring connection between the University Campus of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon and Costa de Caparica, extending into a corridor that will serve Trafaria, São João da Caparica, Quinta do Torrão, Quinta Santo António and Costa de Caparica, ensuring better connectivity of this territory to the current Metro Sul do Tejo network.
