This Saturday, another Service Area for Motorhomes was inaugurated in Alentejo. The Service and Overnight Area for Motorhomes (ASA) now opened in Mora is the 13th in the Alentejo Region, a project integrated into the Infrastructure Network for Motorhomes promoted by the Regional Tourism Entity of Alentejo and Ribatejo.
In effect for around three years, this pioneering project that covers the regions of Alentejo and Ribatejo intends to expand further by 2025.
Rádio campanário spoke with the President of ERT of Alentejo and Ribatejo, Dr. José Manuel Santos, who gave us an overview of how the project has been going and its future prospects. The person responsible for ERT Alentejo and Ribatejo started by telling us “It is a difficult project to insert into a very large territory but which has a very clear objective, which is to create a tourist offer, create services, create facilities for a market segment that is growing, both nationally and internationally, where there is each There are more and more motorhome drivers who like to use Alentejo and Ribatejo as territories, passageways or as destination areas.”
The project, developed in partnership with the Municipalities of the two regions, has already included several works in various locations over the three years of its implementation. Even so, explains José Santos, with some difficulties, namely “with the fact that Municipal Councils often cannot find contractors to carry out the works or difficulties in integrating technological components and connecting each service area to the Portal where reservations need to be made.” The President of ERT Alentejo and Ribatejo emphasizes, however, that “all these difficulties have been faced in a very clear and decisive way.”
José Santos also said that, despite the difficulties, “In these three years we have already had more than two thousand entries in these service areas already available, now 15 in total in Alentejo and Ribatejo, after the opening of the most recent one, in Mora.” The person responsible believes that these infrastructures “They have brought people to low-density areas, resulting in the consumption of services in our local communities.”
The Regional Tourism Entity of Alentejo and Ribatejo continues to invest in promoting this Network, having signed a strategic partnership with the ACP of Portugal.
Asked by Rádio Campanário about the future prospects for the project, the President of Turismo Alentejo e Ribatejo stressed “The prospect is that we will have 14 more service areas by the end of 2024, across the two regions, with the possibility of three to five more areas coming into operation in the 1st quarter of 2025.” José Manuel Santos highlights that “Municipalities are investing because they also have phenomena in their localities of some parking disorder for these motorhomes and these service areas provide security to these users who thus have a properly organized place.”
Being an innovative and pioneering project, the President of ERT Alentejo and Ribatejo concludes by highlighting “We want to be an example for the whole country because it is not enough to say that we want more sustainable tourism, we need to create supply and infrastructure to invite tourists to enjoy the fresh air, the rurality, the beautiful landscapes that the region has.”
