The project that has long been desired by the Portuguese Stroke Association is about to start in Leiria. ‘Multidisciplinary Home Support’ is the name of the project of the Portuguese Stroke Association, which, in compliance with its statutes, will begin support activities for stroke victims who are bedridden and/or have mobility difficulties in the municipality of Leiria.
Four multidisciplinary teams were created, each consisting of a doctor, a nurse, a physiotherapist, a nutritionist, a psychologist and a social worker to provide home support to patients who suffered strokes and were bedridden or with severe mobility limitations.
“The idea is no longer new and it took a long time before it became possible. We have been preparing everything for a year and the municipality of Leiria has been a great help in putting this project into practice”, began by saying Fernando Venâncio, president of the Portuguese Stroke Association.
Speaking to our newspaper, the person responsible explains that the project will operate throughout the municipality of Leiria. “When the Santo André hospital, in Leiria, discharges users, communicate with our team and we will move forward”, he explains.
According to Fernando Venâncio, a patient who suffers a stroke loses quality of life and so does his family, so “this team will help patients and families, particularly caregivers, and the role of the psychologist will be fundamental in this aspect.
